Just dropping a note to say "Hi" to everyone. I've been doing good. Went to Markoff's Haunted Forest for the first time with [livejournal.com profile] lillbet and [livejournal.com profile] aforestgrew. It was fun. Kind of like Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens except in the woods. Been hanging out with some of my coworkers as well which is nice. :)

My Graphic Novel Book Club is still alive, though we seemed to have lost one of our two members. Tuesday we talked about the first Sandman novel and our adult librarian came as well. Trying to find more ways to advertise it (without having to pay money). I do find it amusing that we've been an all girl group so far.

Decided that I'm going to dress up as a Star Trek officer for Halloween. Hopefully other people will be dressing up at work, too, like they said they would. Either way it will be fun. I have the tricorder app on my phone and can make the communicator noise, so I think I'll have fun playing with that throughout the day.

Other than that, I've just been chilling and counting down the days to Christmas. I'm going home for the week before Christmas and can't wait to see people. :)

As some of y'all know, I'm going home (Florida) for the summer. I have a Wii up here and was wondering if anyone would like to borrow it while I am gone, since I do not need it in FL. I have one remote with nunchuck, the Wii Sports game, two dance pads with a Disney dance game (with remixes of classic Disney songs), a microphone and karaoke game, and the Wii Fit. I like spreading gaming love and feel sad that they'll just be boxed up until I come back. Comment if you would be interested using them for the summer.

So I bought a 2 liter of Coke yesterday when I went grocery shopping. When I had my first glass of it, I thought it tasted off, but figured it was just a weird combination of tastes from the Coke and what I was eating. I tried to drink some more today and it still tasted different. I was examining the bottle, not sure what I was expecting to find, when I saw that there was Hebrew writing on the bottle top. The label was entirely English and nothing else seemed out of the ordinary, so I was really puzzled about finding Hebrew on my Coke. I did a search online to see what I could find and this little bit of information is what I found:

In April of 1985, the Coca-Cola company announced that it was re-formulating its flagship carbonated drink, which to the horror of Coke fans everywhere, included a switchover to high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Soon, the rest of the soft drink industry followed suit, and the classic taste of cane sugar-based sodas became practically extinct. Today, only a few small boutique soft drink companies still make sodas with refined cane sugar (or sucrose, made from sugar beets) a costly ingredient when compared with HFCS — but true carbonated beverage connoisseurs know and can tell the difference, as corn syrup has a characteristically cloying sweetness when compared to refined sugar. For nostalgic Coca-Cola lovers, unless you live in a foreign country that classic taste is but a distant memory.
Every late March and early April, for the two to three weeks leading up to the celebration of the Jewish Passover holiday season in the United States, Coke fans living in major metropolitan areas with large Jewish populations get their Real Thing, if only for that brief fleeting period. According to Jewish law, nothing made with chametz (any of a number of proscribed cereals and grains, including corn) during passover may be consumed — so in order not to lose sales from observant Jews during that eight day period, a small number of Coca-Cola bottlers make a limited batch of the original Coke formulation, using refined sugar. Needless to say, stocks run out quickly and fans of Passover Coke have been known to travel many miles seeking out supermarkets with remaining caches.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Today, in my college chemistry class, we had to use "greater than" and "less than" symbols for something, I heard someone across the room mutter "...the alligator eats the bigger one.." to himself, I feel a little more comfortable in my class now. MLIA.

Peace Prize

Apparently President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

For some reason I feel like I've just been punk'd.

Last night [livejournal.com profile] lila_blue_b made post about the petition actors/directors/etc have signed requesting the release of Roman Polanski from Swiss custody and that he not be extradited to the US. Against my better judgment, because I'm a curious person, I looked googled the petition to find out what people were saying about his arrest. It was definitely a dumb decision to make at midnight, because the support for his release and the quotes I found got me really angry and riled up and I couldn't go to bed for hours because of it.

So, in short, I did the only 'productive' thing I could think of at the time and I emailed the address displayed on the petition website and told them what I thought about their petition. (I was very proud with how rational and not crazy I sounded, because I was still very angry and frustrated at the entire thing.) I got a response from them and just wanted to post it for those interested.

Click for their standard response. )

I've vented my anger and frustration and then read happy ending fluff before I went to bed, so I am much better today and don't expect to get riled up about it again, but I just wanted to share this letter as I feel it explains their background and feelings better than the petition does.

Sometimes I really want to strangle this cat. >O

Pacabel has a fondness of chewing anything that is string shaped. When I first moved in, I didn't realize this and had my Skull Candy headphones laying around and he chewed through them, which meant that I had to buy another pair. A couple of weeks ago, I left them out on accident (I'm super vigilant about putting them away because I don't want him to ruin another pair) and less than half an hour later, there was a pair of chewed through headphones in my room. For the past couple of weeks I've been using my (crappier) back up headphones. I thought I had tucked them away in my bag, but I apparently hadn't put them all the way in. I just turned around to find him chewing on them. They aren't bitten all the way through, but they're still ruined. Seriously not happy with him right now.

Was getting ready for bed and found the culprit red-handed, so I just wanted to rant for a minute before trying to sleep.

Seriously, could strangle him.

(I don't have an appropriately mad icon, so I had to use Donna. Which was basically my reaction minus the cursing that followed.)

To continue with the spammage that I plan on doing today Hey, it's my birthday and I can spam if I want to, here is a list of other holidays and observances that take place today (as taken from Wikipedia):

This is the first time I've heard of Stillbirth Remembrance Day. In honor of it, I'll take a moment to remember my younger sister, Kimberly, who was stillborn. I was two when she was born and too young to remember when my mom was pregnant with her. Florida, Maryland, and Virginia are all states who observe Stillbirth Remembrance Day.

And now time for bed. -_- zzz

Thanks to this post on [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek, I found out about The Bureau of Communication and was compelled to write a note of my own. Your formal notice:

remadi: (explain)
Most of these won't make sense if you're not a horse person, but they're very amusing, so I had to share. My mom forwarded this list to me from the flhorse mailing list. For some reason #4 is missing. Remember, practice makes perfect.
I definitely need to work on #1. )
remadi: (Default)
It's so wrong, so I had to share. )

Also, I've been watching episodes of Enterprise. I feel like physical contact with T'Pol is way too common. Am I just being picky?

Oh, and quick note, I'll be leaving tomorrow morning to go to my cousin's wedding and won't be back until Sunday night - with limited to no internet access. Have a great weekend guys! Why is my spell check telling me internet is spelled wrong? It's making me paranoid.
remadi: (Default)
Hey all! So, I think that everyone is back from their travels. I told [livejournal.com profile] lillbet that we should watch Star Trek IV together (yeah, the one with the whales) and so thought I would see if anyone else wanted to watch it? I have it on my computer so we can watch it at my house. (Limited spacing the main reason why I am posting this on my LJ and not on [livejournal.com profile] gqmf_dc.) Was wondering if any of you guys would be interested in coming over and watching it and, if so, when would be good for you guys? I am going to be out of town next weekend and I start new classes shortly after (but I'm not sure when they are.) Otherwise, I'm fairly free.

ETA: Monday the 10th or Tuesday the 11th would be best for me. Are either one of those days okay with y'all?

ETA2: So, it looks like it's going to be on the 11th at 6pm. If anyone has the DVD, feel free to bring that over and we'll watch that version instead. Discuss how you guys want to handle food and I'll go along with whatever you guys decide.

So, I haven't really been able to get online at all since my friends [livejournal.com profile] lila_blue_b and Laura (whom we are forcing to make an LJ tonight) arrived on Friday (and Sunday) and I know my flist is probably so backed up. I am SOOOO HAPPY that they're here, but I got a chance to get on and wanted to just say "Hi!" to everyone. Not sure when I'll get to actually read posts and such (Laura is leaving on Thursday and [livejournal.com profile] lila_blue_b is leaving Friday or Saturday.) (Not that it matters as much since half of my flist is gone themselves.) But for everyone else, I hope y'all are all well and happy! DC people, we should get together again soon.
remadi: (Default)
So I should be in bed (because [livejournal.com profile] lila_blue_b is coming tomorrow later today!!!), but I'm not quite yet.

[livejournal.com profile] spiderwebb, [livejournal.com profile] raygunronica, her beau (Eric), and I went out the other day and the game Never Have I Ever came up in our conversation (remember?) and none of us remembered how to actually play it. Well, now you can have a refresher course while reading Star Trek fic Never Have I Ever. (Warning for slut!Kirk) I was so amused that this fic came up so soon after our convo and had to share. So next time we're together, we can play Never Have I Ever.

Okay, now time for bed.

Torchwood

Last night my internet decided not to work for me. Actually, it teased me by going between local connection and limited connectivity, but never actually connecting enough for me to get online. :(

All I have to say about Torchwood right now, and it needs saying, is: )

Fireflies!

Jul. 9th, 2009 09:10 pm
remadi: (Glee)
For those of you who don't know, we do not have fireflies in Florida (where I grew up.) One of my favorite things to do when I visited family in Iowa was to capture fireflies in a jar. So I was walking home tonight from class as it was getting dark (8:30pm), listening to music and not really thinking about anything, when I see this small flash of light out of the corner of my eye. Being the sometimes curious person that I am, I looked to see what it was and was welcomed to another flash of light. I immediately knew what it was and thought "FIREFLIES!!" and promptly started smiling in happiness. I totally forgot about these little bugs and they came as such a surprise, because, of course, I'm used to Florida. I saw a few more on the way home and am still smiling because of them. I just had to share.

tl;dr FIREFLIES!! They make me smile.

Just a quick note to say HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY to all of my American Flisters! Hope y'all are having a fantastically fun and safe holiday! \o/
